1. Ginger
Ginger – whose scientific name is Zingiber officinale – is a plant native to India. Only its rhizome – its underground root – is used for cooking, but also in traditional medicine.
Ginger facilitates the digestion of fats, thanks to its choleretic capacities (it acts on the biliary secretion and helps its evacuation). It is also a powerful analgesic which attenuates the pains, in particular dental. It is also known for its aphrodisiac effects and as a stimulant against general fatigue.
How to use ginger against toothache?
Finely grate a ginger rhizome, after removing the brown bark. Mix the powder with water to form a fluid paste and soak a cotton ball.
Place the cotton ball on the tooth (not on the gum) and let it work.
2. The clove
Clove is a classic for soothing dental ailments, it is also used to whiten teeth. The clove tree is a large tree (up to 20 meters high), native to Indonesia. Its evergreen leaves are oval and its four-petaled pinkish-white flowers have the particularity of forming flower buds called cloves.
The nails are therefore harvested before the buds open and dried naturally in the sun until they turn a dark brown color.
Cloves contain eugenol, a substance that fights bacteria and has analgesic properties that reduce sensitivity. Many dental products contain eugenol. It is also used in cooking.
The great advantage of clove is that its action is instantaneous.

You can also find clove oil. Put one or two drops on a cotton swab, and apply to the painful area. Do not rinse your mouth, but spit it out so as not to swallow the saliva containing the essential oil.

3. The clay
Clay is a rocky substance that you find in powder form. Whether red, white, green or brown, it has been used in cosmetics and traditional medicine for a very long time and in all civilizations.

It can be used internally to soothe intestinal mucous membranes, among other things, and externally as a poultice. It can then be used to heal skin burns, repair tired tendons (riders use it on their horses' limbs), ease bruises, relieve scratches, cuts and bites and heal infected pimples.
Thanks to its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and healing properties, clay is commonly used to treat toothaches.

Prepare a poultice by mixing clay with water. Avoid plastic or wooden containers, and mix until smooth.
Apply the poultice to your cheek and leave it on until the clay is dry, usually for an hour.
Repeat the operation, spacing out applications for two or three hours. If you have pain on both sides of the jaw, it is advisable not to apply two poultices at once, but to alternate the two sides.
4. Ice cubes
The simplest and most economical solution is to anesthetize the painful area with cold. Indeed, the cold paralyzes certain cells and acts as an anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic.
If you don't have cloves, ginger or clay at home and your toothache happens outside of store hours, you can always find some ice cubes in your freezer.

The cold should quickly numb the pain and soothe you. If the effect becomes unpleasant, take a break and try again later.
5. Essential oils

Essential oils are concentrates of the active principles of plants. Only one part of the plant is pressed to obtain the oil, which requires very large quantities of plants, to obtain a very powerful substrate.
They should be used in very small quantities and should not be swallowed. Remember to spit out your saliva once the treatment has been applied.
How to use essential oils against toothache?
As mentioned above, clove oil is very effective. You can also use Roman chamomile essential oil. Put a pure drop on the painful part three to four times a day.
Essential oils are often combined to benefit from their synergy. Against dental pain, you can mix 1 drop of True lavender, 1 drop of Roman chamomile and 2 drops of St. John's wort vegetable oil. Indeed, essential oils do not mix with water, but you must use vegetable oil to obtain a homogeneous solution.
Wash your hands and apply two drops to the tip of your index finger. Massage the painful area four to five times a day. You can also soak a small cotton pad and leave it on for a few minutes.
There is a variation of this recipe to obtain a larger quantity of solution: mix 4 drops of Roman chamomile, 1 drop of clove and 5 milliliters of St. John's wort vegetable oil.
