Dental implants: prices and practical information

Updated: November 2, 2022

The first dental implant was made in 1965 by an orthopedic surgeon. Since then, the field of implantology has continued to develop thanks to the design of more and more sophisticated dental implants. But quality comes at a price (literally)!

So if you are planning to have one or more dental implants, you probably have a lot of financial questions. How much will my dental implant cost? Is it covered by social security? What reimbursement can I expect from my health insurance company? Are there solutions to reduce costs?

In this article, Nutrident will give you all the information you need to answer all your questions about dental implants fees.

What does the cost of a dental implant depend on?

Before throwing numbers at you, it is important that you know the different variables that will affect the cost of the entire process of placing one (or more) dental implants. We list below the main elements that determine the price:

  • Dentist's fees: the fees of different dentists are highly variable (the most experienced and reputable ones generally have higher fees), which is why it is a good idea to compare prices;
  • Number of implants to be placed;
  • The quality of the implants: zirconia implants are twice as expensive as titanium implants;
  • The price of the prosthetic act: that is to say the whole process of realization and installation of the prosthesis that is fixed on the implants. This includes the fees of the prosthetist, the complexity of the prosthesis and the materials used;
  • The complexity of the operation: it will depend on the position of the teeth to be replaced, the need for a bone graft and its type if it is necessary, the oral condition;
  • Complementary examinations carried out (X-rays, scans…);
  • The technique performed (immediate or delayed loading…);
  • Geographical location: it is important to know that the prices charged in France for implantology are among the most expensive in Europe.

What is the price of a dental implant?

Now that you are aware of the variables that determine the price of dental implants, it is time to give you some (most recent) figures:

The price of a dental implant and its abutment varies between 700 and 1500 € with an average of 1200 €. To this price, you must add between 600 and 1000 € for the crown, which brings the total bill to 1800 € on average for a single tooth (between 1500 and 2500 €).

For each additional procedure an additional amount must be paid:

  • For a bone graft in the jaw: the costs are extremely variable, count 600 to 5000 € additional;
  • For a dental extraction : 60 and 250 € for a basic extraction and between 100 and 500 € for a surgical extraction;
  • For complementary examinations: 10 to 150 € for X-rays and between 150 and 400 € for a scanner.

All these additional services can easily bring the total bill for the replacement of a single tooth to about 3500 € (between 2000 and 5000 €).

For the replacement of all the teeth of both jaws by implants, you should count between 30 000 and 60 000 € with an average price closer to 35 000 €.

Dental implant: what is covered by social security?

Almost none! Unfortunately, the new 2020 100% dental reimbursement reform does not include dental implants. The process of installing one or more dental implants is therefore entirely at your expense, well almost, because the health insurance covers the reimbursement of all or part of the cost of the crown or crowns (depending on their materials …).

This is why it iswise to opt for a health insurance plan that covers the installation of dental implants. In fact, some of them reimburse at least part of the costs incurred in this type of intervention. So don't hesitate to use online mutual insurance comparisons to choose the one that best suits your needs and reduce the amount you pay out of pocket! We propose you a very well done one, free and without commitment:

To conclude: we give you some tips to reduce your bill!

Given the high cost of dental implants and the fact that they are not covered by health insurance, we suggest some solutions to reduce your bill:

  • Getting quotes from multiple dentists;
  • Subscribe to the best mutual insurance company after having compared several;
  • Medical tourism (more specifically dental tourism), especially in Spain and Hungary;
  • Consider dental school!
