Philips Sonicare for Kids : Test and Review

Updated: November 1, 2022

Learning to brush your teeth should be done at an early age. It's about keeping baby teeth in good condition to prepare the mouth for healthy permanent teeth, but also about instilling good habits in your child from the start.

The electric brush is more effective in removing plaque and is now available in a child's version. It can also be accompanied by a Bluetooth-connected application that acts as a coach for your child and is an irresistible incentive, thanks to playful animations.

Nutrident invites you today to discover the Philips Sonicare for Kids brush.

Philips, the leader in sonic brushes, now adapts to children

The electric toothbrush market is divided between two techniques: the oscillating rotation and the sonic. Oral-B is the leader in the former, Philips in the latter.

Here is a video that explains how to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush:

Its principle is to reproduce the classic movement that you make with a manual toothbrush, but much faster, at a rate of 500 movements per second. To adapt its brush to children, Philips has designed its Sonicare for Kids with :

  • a smaller, ergonomic, non-slip handle for your child to hold firmly;
  • a smaller, oval-shaped brush head to reach the most inaccessible corners of a child's mouth;
  • a brush with extra soft bristles to avoid damaging the enamel and the gums in formation;
  • This brush is fully lined with rubber to prevent injury to the mouth or lips;
  • a fun design, with a choice of 8 visuals;
  • an application that converts tooth brushing into an educational game.

What are the specifics of the Sonicare for Kids connected electric toothbrush

Sonicare for Kids is a connected electric toothbrush that your child can customize. He can choose among 8 visuals and he can also use two sticker sheets representing Sparkly, the little character linked to the application.

The brush offers two modes with different brushing depending on the age of your child. The extra soft mode is reserved for the youngest, from 3 years old. Note, however, that the electric brush is best reserved for children over 5 years old, especially since the Sonicare is not the lightest of children's brushes. (This is one area where she needs to make improvements). Before the age of 5, it is not always easy to hold it for two minutes and to direct it well. The other brushing method is still gentle, but a little more energetic and is reserved for children over 7 years old.

Sonicare for kids has a built-in timer, so you can use it without the app. However, it does not have a memory and you will not keep the history of brushing done outside the application. The two minutes are divided into four thirty-second sessions for the four areas: lower and upper jaw, inner and outer sides of the teeth.

However, the brush does not have a pressure sensor that warns you if your child is pressing too hard on the teeth and gums.

Sonicare for Kids has a battery life of up to three weeks, brushing twice a day.

The Sonicare for Kids application

The Sonicare does not have positional sensors and it is up to your child to follow his or her jaw in a live 3D representation. This lack of a sensor makes the results of the analysis less reliable.

Sonicare has a voice coach (which you can mute) that provides brushing tips to improve technique. The instructions are also visual. They are very clear and explain good brushing techniques to help your child develop good habits.

The character of the application is called Sparkly. With its adorable look, it guides your child who receives gift rewards for each successful brushing session. Your child should remove any bacteria he sees in his Sparkly's mouth by carefully brushing each quadrant of his mouth.

Over time, he unlocks levels that allow Sparkly to evolve. The game never gets boring and motivates children to brush their teeth. It is interactive and Sparkly responds to children's requests.

The separate dashboard allows you to monitor your child's performance and progress, as well as set up personalized tiers and incentives.
